What Are Etsy Tags?

Etsy Help says tags help most when there is no matching attribute, and they suit aspirational or buyer-minded terms such as "gift for her". It also says tags should use accurate and relevant words, and that a diverse set improves your search visibility. A tag generator drafts that list for you. You still decide what stays.

How We Compared These Tools

We opened each vendor's own pages on Nov 4, 2026: the MyDesigns Vision and Phraser AI page and plan docs, the RankHero pricing and tag generator pages, the eRank pricing page, and the code behind the Merch Titans tool. We scored four things: where the tag draft starts (keyword or design image), whether it works in bulk, what the free tier allows, and what the vendor publishes about limits.

We did not run a blind test of tag quality, so we make no claim about which tool's tags rank best. Listimize and ListifyAI did not load for us on Nov 4 (a connection reset and an empty page), so we left them out rather than guess.

1. MyDesigns: Best for Bulk Titles and Tags From the Design

MyDesigns is the best choice when you have many designs and need a title and 13 tags for each. It is a seller platform, not a marketplace. Per MyDesigns, it has 200K+ registered users and 50M+ products created.

Two checkable facts back the ranking:

• It starts from the image. The Vision and Phraser AI page says Vision AI generates titles, tags and descriptions by analyzing your designs, and Phraser AI generates listing data from the keywords you pick for a field.
• It works on many listings at once. The same page lists "Generate in bulk" and describes data for multiple listings at once. The plan docs publish the daily Vision AI allowance: 4 on Free, 240 on Starter, 960 on Pro and 6,000 on Pro Plus (docs checked Oct 28, 2026).

The page also says the model is trained on best-selling product data and tuned for Etsy rankings. That is MyDesigns' own claim, and we did not test it. The workflow advantage is that the listing data lands in the same library as your mockups, so you can go from design to published listing without copying text between tools. MyDesigns Limits

• Free is a test drive. It allows 4 Vision AI actions a day, so 100 designs would take 25 days on Free.
• It is not a keyword research tool. We found no search volume or competition figures on the Vision page. Pair it with a research step (see the Etsy keyword research guide).
• We did not test tag quality. Review a few outputs from your own designs before you run a whole catalog.
• We found no stated AI credit cost for Vision AI. Check the app before a large run.

2. Merch Titans Etsy Tag Generator: Best Free Starting Point

Our free Etsy tag generator takes a keyword and returns tag suggestions built around Etsy's 13-tag, 20-character structure. It is the quickest way to draft one listing's tags with no budget.

It has clear limits: it starts from a keyword, not from your artwork, and it shows the first 5 tags until your email is verified (per the tool code, Nov 4). It writes tags only, not titles. For a title check, use the listing optimizer.

Choose it if you have a handful of listings and want a free draft you can edit by hand.

3. RankHero: Best for Tags With Volume and Competition Numbers

RankHero's Etsy tag generator page says it shows how many listings compete for each tag and how many buyers search for it each month, plus a 12-month trend graph, trademark warnings and a meter for the 13 tag slots that flags tags over 20 characters. It also has a Title Generator.

On its pricing page, the Free tier gives 3 uses a day per tool, rising to 25, 100 and 300 across paid tiers. We could not read the paid plan prices from the page, so we do not quote them.

Choose it if you want to pick tags by search and competition numbers, one keyword at a time.

4. eRank: Best for Research Plus Listing Audits

eRank's pricing page lists an AI Listing Helper that generates titles, tags and descriptions with competition and search-volume data. The Free plan allows 1 use a day and the paid tiers 10, 20 and 100. The same page lists keyword searches (5 a day on Free), listing audits and a rank checker. We could not read plan prices, so none are quoted. Our eRank review goes deeper.

Choose it if you want keyword data and listing audits next to a tag helper, and you work one listing at a time.

Worked Example: One Listing, Checked Against Etsy's Rules

Say you sell a retro dog mom t-shirt. The draft below is illustrative, not a researched keyword set. It shows the length check you should run on any generated list.

The last row is a trap: a long, natural phrase is 25 characters and Etsy will not take it as a tag. Shorten it to "dog mom gift". The title for the same listing, "Funny Dog Mom T-Shirt, Retro Dog Lover Gift Tee, Mother's Day Gift for Owners", is 77 characters and 14 words, inside Etsy's 140-character limit and under its 15-word suggestion.

How to Generate Tags and Titles for Many Designs in Bulk

At 13 tags per listing, 100 listings means 1,300 tags to write or review. This is the routine we would use. The steps follow the MyDesigns Vision page, read Nov 4, 2026.

1. Add your designs. Upload them or pick them from your library.
2. Let Vision AI read them. It analyzes what is on each design.
3. Generate the listing data. Phraser AI writes titles, tags and descriptions, and you can pick a field and feed it your keywords.
