This guide sticks to what Etsy itself publishes. Every rule below comes from Etsy's Help Center pages, linked in each section and checked on Oct 29, 2026. Where we add advice, it is labeled Our reading, so you can tell policy from interpretation. Etsy can change its rules at any time, so open the linked page before you act on anything here. This is not legal advice.
What Etsy Says About AI-Created Items
Etsy's page on what you can sell has a dedicated AI-generated content section (Etsy Help Center: What Can I Sell on Etsy?). Three points matter most for POD sellers:
- AI is allowed with your creative input. Etsy says it allows sellers to use AI tools to create certain items "as long as they contribute their own creative input and follow Etsy's policies."
- You must disclose it. "Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI."
- Your prompts count. Sellers can use their original prompts with AI tools to create what they sell. Etsy's permitted examples include a fantasy scene based on a seller's original prompt and a custom portrait of a buyer's pet generated with AI tools.
Etsy files seller-prompted AI creations under the "Designed by a seller" category, alongside original designs sold as digital downloads or printed by a third party. It adds that if you work with a production partner, you must disclose that partner in your relevant listings.
What Etsy Does Not Allow
The same page lists three kinds of AI content that are not allowed:
| Not allowed | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Bot-generated content | Listings or items produced by automated bots with no real seller creative input |
| AI-generated functional instructions | Craft patterns, recipes and instructions written by AI |
| AI prompt bundles | Selling lists of prompts instead of finished work |
For a print-on-demand shop, the practical line is simple: sell finished designs you directed with your own prompts and edits, not prompt packs or machine-written patterns.
What Etsy Says About Listing Photos
Etsy's help article on listing image requirements (How Do Etsy's Listing Image Requirements Apply to My Listings?) covers photos and AI together:
- Unedited photo. "Etsy requires at least one unedited photo for most items." An unedited photo should show the actual item against a real background and must not be edited or changed in any way. Some exceptions apply depending on the item type.
- AI editing is allowed elsewhere. For your other images, Etsy says you can use photo-editing tools, including AI, to adjust lighting or color, crop or resize, or change backgrounds, as long as the edits do not make the item look different from what buyers will receive.
- No misleading edits. Etsy says not to use AI to hide damage or to change an item's appearance in a way that could mislead buyers.
- Make photo one honest. Etsy advises making the first photo the clearest, most realistic representation of the item buyers will receive.
Print-on-Demand Mockups and Digital Downloads
The same article spells out requirements by item type. Two matter here:
- Print-on-demand items: if a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product like a t-shirt or mug, you may use a stock photo mockup, as long as the stock photo's owner has authorized its use.
- Digital downloads: if the item has a visual component such as a printable or template, include a preview of the actual content buyers will receive. For items without a visual component, representative imagery, including AI-generated images, is allowed as long as it does not mislead buyers.
Our reading: a POD mockup is fine, but it has to show the design the buyer will get on the product they will get. If you sell both physical and digital versions of a design, show each version honestly.
How Etsy Handles AI Detection and Reports
Etsy's image-requirements article also says what happens when AI-generated images are involved:
- If AI-generated images are detected when you create a listing, Etsy says it will provide tips to help you represent your item accurately and meet its photo expectations.
- If someone reports your listing for potentially misusing AI, Etsy says that "in the beginning" these reports will help it understand how buyers perceive potential AI misuse and will not result in immediate enforcement action.
Those are the only statements we found on those pages. We did not find a published date for broader changes, so we do not state one. If you see news about stricter enforcement, check the Etsy Help Center and your Shop Manager notices for the current position.

Production Partners: The POD Rule Sellers Miss
Etsy treats print-on-demand services as production partners. Its article (Working with Production Partners on Etsy) lists Printful, Printify and Gooten as examples of POD services and says a production partner physically produces items based on your own, original designs.
What to do:
- Add each partner in Shop Manager under Settings, then Partners you work with.
- Choose whether to show the partner's name to buyers or a public descriptive title such as "Apparel printer."
- Disclose the partner in the relevant listings, as Etsy requires.
Etsy says companies that only resell ready-made products, or white-label, OEM or ODM manufacturers, do not count as production partners, and that sourcing from them for an Etsy shop violates its reselling policies, with penalties up to and including suspension.
A POD Seller's AI Compliance Checklist (Our Reading)
Use this as a working routine. It translates the rules above into steps; it is our interpretation, not Etsy policy.
- Create with your own direction. Write original prompts, edit the output, and keep your prompt history and edited files.
- Disclose in every AI listing. Add a plain sentence to the description, such as: "This design was created with AI tools from the seller's original prompts and edited by the seller."
- Never describe AI work as handmade. Etsy says AI-generated work cannot be misrepresented as handmade or entirely your own creation.
- Skip prompt bundles and AI-written patterns. They are listed as not allowed.
- Keep one unedited photo where required. Make photo one the clearest, most realistic view of what buyers get.
- Use authorized mockups for POD. Stick to mockups you have the right to use, and make sure they show your design on the real base product.
- List your production partner. Add it under Partners you work with and mention it in your listings.
- Keep proof of your process. If a listing is removed, evidence of how you create the item is what Etsy asks for in an appeal.
If Etsy Removes a Listing
Etsy's appeal article (How Do I Submit an Appeal for a Listing Removed by Etsy?) says removed listings appear on the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, and that appeals are filed one listing at a time. Unless stated otherwise, you have up to 6 months from the removal to appeal.
For listings removed under creativity-standards rules, you can attach up to 12 photos, videos or supporting documents that show how you create the item. Etsy says each file must be larger than 120KB, and videos must be 3 minutes or less and no larger than 500MB each, and that a video of a finished item alone is not sufficient proof. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our Etsy policy violation appeal guide.
Where MyDesigns Fits: The Best POD Platform for AI-Assisted Etsy Shops
If you design with AI, you want one workflow that keeps your creative input visible and makes disclosure easy. MyDesigns is the best all-in-one print-on-demand platform for that, because it covers the whole path from your prompt to a live Etsy listing in one account:
- Create with your own prompts. Dream AI generates designs from your prompts using multiple image models, and the Canvas editor lets you add your own edits, which is the creative input Etsy asks for. Dream AI uses AI credits, which come with paid plans.
- Mockups that show your real design. MyDesigns renders mockups, including your own PSD templates (Starter and above) and video mockups, so buyers see the design they will receive.
- Listing copy you control. Vision AI drafts titles, tags and descriptions. Add your AI disclosure sentence to each description before you publish; Etsy requires it and you stay responsible for it.
- Fulfillment with a named partner. Physical orders are printed by 240 Express, MyDesigns' contracted print partner, with 2-3 day production and base prices from $6.75 for a Gildan 5000. Our reading: if 240 Express prints your Etsy orders, add it as a production partner and disclose it, as Etsy asks.
- Publish at scale. Bulk publish sends batches to Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce and TikTok Shop. Paid plans publish 24, 48 or 120 products per batch.
MyDesigns has 200K+ registered users and more than 50M products created (per MyDesigns). Plans start free; paid plans run from $19.99/mo billed yearly (see current plans).
MyDesigns limits to know: the Free plan has no monthly AI credits, so Dream AI needs a paid plan; it does include a handful of Vision AI, mockup and background-removal actions a day, but custom PSD and video mockups start on paid plans. Scout AI is on Pro and Pro Plus. MyDesigns does not file your Etsy disclosures for you, so add them yourself.
Compared with the POD services Etsy names, Printful and Printify are fulfillment networks first; MyDesigns adds AI design, bulk mockups and bulk publishing on top of fulfillment, which is why it is our #1 pick for AI-assisted Etsy sellers. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Etsy allow AI-generated art?
Yes, with conditions. Etsy's Help Center says sellers may use AI tools to create certain items as long as they contribute their own creative input and follow Etsy's policies, and that sellers must disclose AI use in the listing description (checked Oct 29, 2026). Bot-generated content, AI-generated functional instructions and AI prompt bundles are not allowed.
Do I have to disclose AI on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy says sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI, and that AI-generated work cannot be presented as handmade or entirely the seller's own creation (checked Oct 29, 2026). Put a plain sentence in the description of every listing that uses AI.
Can I use AI to edit my Etsy listing photos?
Yes, apart from your required unedited photo. Etsy says most items need at least one unedited photo, and that other images may use photo-editing tools, including AI, to crop, resize, adjust lighting or color or change backgrounds, as long as they accurately represent what buyers will receive (checked Oct 29, 2026).
Can I use mockups for print on demand listings on Etsy?
Yes, in the case Etsy describes. If a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product like a t-shirt or mug, Etsy says you may use a stock photo mockup if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use (checked Oct 29, 2026). Make sure the mockup shows the design buyers will actually receive.
Are AI prompt bundles allowed on Etsy?
No. Etsy's Help Center lists AI prompt bundles, bot-generated content and AI-generated functional instructions such as craft patterns and recipes as AI content that is not allowed (checked Oct 29, 2026). Selling finished artwork you created with your own prompts is the permitted path.
What happens if Etsy detects AI images in my listing?
Etsy says that if AI-generated images are detected when you create a listing, it will provide tips to help you represent your item accurately and meet its photo expectations (checked Oct 29, 2026). Etsy also says early buyer reports of possible AI misuse would not result in immediate enforcement action at the beginning.
Do I have to disclose my print on demand production partner on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy says that if you work with a production partner you must disclose it in your relevant listings, and that you can add partners under Shop Manager, Settings, Partners you work with (checked Oct 29, 2026). Etsy names print-on-demand services such as Printful, Printify and Gooten as examples of valid production partners.
How do I appeal an Etsy listing that was removed?
Open Shop Manager, go to Policy violations, find the removed listing and select View and appeal (checked Oct 29, 2026). Etsy says appeals are filed per listing and, unless stated otherwise, you have up to 6 months from the removal. For creativity-standards appeals you can add up to 12 photos, videos or documents that show how you make the item.
